National Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The following is a list of websites that provide information regarding child protection to caregivers, educators and youth.

Child Welfare Information Gateway
A resource guide developed by the Children’s Bureau of the US Department of Health and Human Services is located on this website. This guide includes information on protective factors, how to increase community awareness, how to protect children from abuse, information for caregivers, and additional resources. The site also has tip sheets for caregivers and parents available in English and Spanish.

NetSmartz Workshop
This site is helpful for parents who have kids interested in social networking, blogging, online gaming, and other internet venues.  Information on internet safety and cyberbullying is available for caregivers, educators, law enforcement, and youth. Videos, presentations, and games specific to different age ranges make the information entertaining and understandable for youth.

Connect Safely
This site also provides information on internet safety. Most advice on this site is directed at how parents can protect their children from internet predators and cyberbulling but safety tips for kids and teens are also available.  Some of the useful information for parents include: Facebook security, video gaming controls, sexting prevention and the limitations of internet filters.

National Child Traumatic Stress Network
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network has a surplus of resources related to child abuse and prevention. Resources for parents include: Physical Punishment: What Parents Should Know, Raising Well-Behaved Kids: What Parents Should Know, information on child development, and links to additional resources. There is also an abundance of information for mental health professionals, educators, policy makers and youth.

Prevent Child Abuse North Dakota
This site contains tips on how to prevent child abuse and neglect before it occurs and how to prevent its reoccurrence. Sexual abuse, psychological maltreatment, physical abuse and neglect are each addressed with different actions a person can take to help a child or to stop hurting a child.
