Treatments That Work

Not all children or adults exposed to traumatic experiences are affected the same way. Everyone is different, but many of them are able to adapt to and overcome difficult events and situations.

When a traumatic experience overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, post-traumatic stress reactions occur, which can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). When PTSD is left untreated, it is likely to interfere with an individual’s healthy development. This can lead to long-term difficulties with school, relationships, jobs, and the ability to fully participate in a healthy life.

Fortunately, there are proven and effective evidence-based treatments for children and adults experiencing traumatic stress. With the right treatment and support, children and adults can and do recover from traumatic experiences.

What is an Evidence-Based Treatment?

When a treatment method is said to be evidence-based, it means that it is supported by objective and scientific evidence that proves its effectiveness. We can’t trust what we feel is true or effective, so real-world, scientific testing must be done to verify with data that the method being used is leading to the results found.

Criteria determining whether a treatment is evidence-based include the following:

Number of studies by different researchers

Quality of studies

Experts agree that the treatment works based off of the research outcomes
